Details: Phonetic Antique Newspaper DI ANGLO SACSUN MAY 29 1847 Americana Media History American History Collectible Abolitionist Andrews & Boyle Phonographic

This newspaper is a May 29, 1847 issue of "Di Anglo Sacsun," a reformist phonetically printed newspaper designed to open the world of news and current events to the massive uneducated population of the United States in the 19th century. As the written language became more formalized and spelling was increasingly standardized, a movement sprang up around the impoverished, uneducated, or enslaved people who were left behind. According to the The Awl, "The reform advocated by 'Di Anglo-Sacsun' was advertised as a self-fashioning vehicle for poverty-stricken workers of all races - it reprinted poetry by abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier, and Frederick Douglass advertised the paper in the pages of his own 'The North Star.'"
