Description
Antique Carved Rosewood 1863 Steinway Grand Piano w Provenance. Civil War period American made Steinway grand piano. This piano has only been in two families since it was made. It measures 3 feet in height, 4.5 feet in width, 7 feet in length approximately when lid is closed. According to Steinway archival records, this is a Steinway Style 1 grand, serial number 7465, built May 23, 1863 in New York. French rosewood carved case, with serpentine legs, scrolled music rack. The case maker was Kohler. According to the consignor's research "The piano was first purchased on October 22, 1863 by the Stettheimer family in Rochester, New York. Some research with historical societies in Rochester has led us to Joseph Stettheimer, a banker, who was married to Rosette Walter. Their daughter, Florine Stettheimer, became quite famous as an American painter - Deco influenced / early Modernist in New York City in the early 1900s. It has been in our family 70 years."
