A historical novel based on the attempts of banker William Paterson to establish a Scottish colony in 1698 on the Isthmus of Panama, better known as the "Darien Scheme," which failed after a year of tropical misery and repeated attacks by the Spanish. Warburton was himself an experienced and avid traveler who died tragically just after publication of this novel on board a burning ship which was en route to the Isthmus of Panama.
