Colima Ceramic Seated Figure of Male Hunchback
Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast of Mexico, Colima culture, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hollow, seated pottery figure of a man, with an erect, prominent phallus, his knees drawn up and his hands resting on them. His face is simple, dominated by wide, rectangular ears and a huge nose, all three pierced and presumably once given rings to wear. He has coffee-bean eyes, a small, pouting mouth, and wears a crossed headband. Turn the piece to the side, and you will see that he has a prominent hunchback. Hunchbacks make frequent appearances in Mesoamerican art; they were thought of as powerful, shamanic figures. Size: 4.8" W x 7.6" H (12.2 cm x 19.3 cm); 9.5" H (24.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex private Beverly Hills, California, USA collection
