Item Details
Description
Mexico, Spanish Colonial inspired, ca. early 19th century CE. A colorful, free-standing wood carving representing "La Cruz de las Animas" or "The Cross of Souls", this religious artwork is layered with symbolic and allegorical imagery. At the center is Christ on the cross, flanked by the sun and moon, and surmounted above by the Eternal Father and a banner reading INRI (Latin for Jesus of Nazarene, King of the Jews) above him. Along the bottom are several animas solas (meaning lonesome departed ancestral souls) figures - two painted on the base flanking and facing a pair of carved wooden figures recessed in a niche, two carved figures above, and two more souls painted on the stepped base of the cross behind them. All are hoping for salvation while awaiting judgement amidst the flames of purgatory. An image of the Virgin Mary (Mater Dolorosa) is painted above them, praying for her Son. A wonderful example of religious art representing a subject that was a popular cult of devotion throughout Mexico during the 19th century. Size: 10.75" W x 22.125" H (27.3 cm x 56.2 cm)

Provenance: private Andrade collection, New York, New York, USA, acquired 1960's
