Description
Pre-Columbian, north coast Peru, Chavin, ca. 1200 to 500 BCE. Very fine stone cup or mortar, probably used for hallucinogenic drugs, from one of the earliest and most artistically advanced cultures of South America. Comprised of a very dark grey volcanic stone, with a short lip, incised with two pairs of abstract jaguar heads facing one another, their large eyes, sharp fangs, and curled frills boldly delineated - and incised lines representing the Life Force emitting from their open mouths. Added red pigment accentuates an already wonderful piece! Size: 2.875" W x 1.625" H (7.3 cm x 4.1 cm)
