East Asia, China, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A beautiful matched pair of wood and lacquer vases of the style known as cinnabar as their red coloring resembles that of cinnabar. To carve these pieces, artisans start with a wooden frame that is covered in thin layers of lacquer. Each layer must dry before the next layer can be placed, a hugely time consuming process. Eventually these layers become thick enough to carve. During the classical period of Chinese civilization, from ca. 500 to 1700 CE, it could take years to prepare and carve vessels of this style. These examples have an upper layer depicting a pastoral scene around the widest point of their bodies, surrounded by floral and vine-like motifs around the leg, shoulder, and neck.
