Early oil on canvas of Doña Juana de Austria, Princess of Portugal, after the 1557 original by Alonso Sánchez Coello, (1531-1588.) A Spanish painter of Portuguese descent who painted in the Dutch style, Coello was one of the most renowned artists of his era.
Skillfully and sensitively painted portrait of a lady. Age unknown but probably 19th century or earlier. Presented in gold frame with brass title plate. From a private collection. Previous owner's name and the price paid for the painting in 1988 (11,000 lire, $8500,) are written in ink on the back of the canvas.
