His first training was given by Josef Heu at the Grazer Gewerbeschule. From 1893 to 1898 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna . His teachers were the famous sculptors Edmund von Hellmer and Caspar von Zumbusch . The Rompreis, an Austrian state travel scholarship, enabled him to study in Italy for one year .
