Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sulawesi Selatan (South Sulawesi), ca. early to mid 20th century CE. An impressive lidded vessel skillfully executed in terracotta, the body presenting a globular form on a concave base with four looped lug handles attached to the shoulder and a fitted lid with a knobbed handle. The entire surface is covered with an intricately delineated decorative program. On the body are 24 vertical columns containing square panels that house stylized geometric motifs (alternating four-pointed star/floral motifs and cross-hatched diamonds) nested between a pair of horizontal registers that feature a band of repeated triangular motifs. On the lid are a trio of concentric circular bands, the central one featuring a repeated four-pointed star or floral motif, 'framed' by two registers of repeated triangular motifs. Red pigment enhances the gorgeous rich brown coloration of the vessel. A stunning work that is at once utilitarian and aesthetically striking. Size: 8.125" in diameter x 8.875" H (20.6 cm x 22.5 cm)
