Item Details
Description
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Bali, ca. early 20th century CE. A beautiful sculptural element created to decorate a gong stand - finely carved from wood (possibly teak) with the image of a mesmerizing mythical figure or deity known as Barong - a lion-like creature believed to be the king of spirits in Bali - and further embellished with red and brown pigments as well as gold leaf. The Balinese build large stands in order to hold large, bossed gongs. This piece may have been intended for a gong used in the traditional Barong dance. A wonderful piece for anyone interested in ethnomusicology or Indonesian art and mythology. Size: 6.25" W x 12.5" H (15.9 cm x 31.8 cm); 14.375" H (36.5 cm) on included custom stand.
