This is the first french-language edition, published in four volumes by Jean Nourse, London, in 1750, of Henry Fielding's classic novel, "Tom Jones", published as the "Histoire de Tom Jones, ou l'Enfant Trouvé" (336, 344, 282 & 341 pages), translated into french by M. de la Place, and with 16 full page engravings from the work of Gravelot (Hubert-François Bourguignon). These are, I believe, the original covers (4.5" x 7.5") - simple off-white semi-rigid boards attached to two-toned paper covered spines, which have the title and volume labels attached to their tops. The spine surfaces are in poor condition, with deep tears to some side edges and cracks to others. The spines and boards are attached, but with flex. The internal bindings are holding, with no loose or missing pages, though there are a number of cracked gutters. Many pages are sunned or otherwise stained, mostly to their borders. There are other recurrent (mostly light) stains, but the text shows no notable fade, and is clearly legible throughout, as are the 16 Gravelot illustrations, all of which are attached, unfaded, and with no substantial stains. There are no stamps or other attachments. There are ink initials to the first title spread, and one other brief number notations, but no other writing. The outside edges are irregular. Several have shallow tears or small edge areas that are missing material. Most pages have no tears.
