Description
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, probably East Sepik Province and Kambot people, ca. mid 20th century CE. A beautiful example of a traditional art form, a painting made using earth-based pigments on a large, flat slab of bark. The painting is highly abstract but seems to depict a mask-like face surrounded by radiating oval rings. Bright red, yellow, white, and black pigment create a rich appearance.
