大型祖先畫像

The expansive space and the background shown make this an interesting depiction. Though the figures of the ancestors have been placed in the foreground, they do not cover the picture. At the very top are the characters ji ru zai 祭 如 在, "sacrifice (veneration) offering (to the ancestors) as if they were present". Below this are curtains and a view of the altar with candles burning in front of it. In the background are mountains and a pagoda. The largest figures are, on the right, a high-ranking civil servant, to his left, his wife, her slightly elderly facial features exactingly and vividly executed with a mischievous, wise smile. Below them are progeny and ancestors. Various symbols such as ruyi, lotus, Infinite Knot, etc. signify great longevity and pureness of character. Very diverse, small inscriptions are attached. In general, the painting is in rather modest condition; the parts around the edge have suffered the most. On the whole, however, the atmosphere rendered by the image is astonishingly good.

Professionally, Mr. Keuper was active as a dealer of antique Chinese art, always made his acquisitions with great care and thus, in all the years, never had a complaint about the identification of an object. He had a comprehensive collection of over 300 specialized books by renowned authors about Chinese antiques (which could also be offered for sale as a whole). This private collection is now being sold due to reasons of age.
