Description
**Originally Listed At $75**
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 1000 to 1300 CE. This brightly-colored section of textile is comprised of tightly-woven fibers in shades of gold, ruby, magenta, black, and deep blues and greens. The composition is comprised of five diagonal rows of light and dark abstract birds, whose heads face one another from above and below, and all are connected to a communal and like-colored line. Birds represented the manifestation of celestial beings within Chancay folklore, so the light and dark birds here could be evocative of the eternal cosmic quarrel between the light of day and the dark that will inevitably follow. Mounted on a satin-lined cardboard backing. Size: 7.25" L x 3.625" W (18.4 cm x 9.2 cm).
Provenance: private Slavin collection, acquired in Peru and Bolivia between 1971 and 1972
