Description
South America, Argentina, Mapuche people, ca. 1500 to 1850 CE. A handsome example of a magical stone, disc-shaped, with a face wearing a helmet or crown in relief on one side and a sunburst on the other. The face has a broad nose and drilled eyes above a fleshy mouth. Ethnographic accounts from the Mapuche make many references to these stones, said to be charged with magical, religious, and social powers. Smaller stones like this one would have been made for personal use. Size: 2.5" W x 2.7" H (6.4 cm x 6.9 cm); 2.85" H (7.2 cm) on included custom stand.
