China, northeast region, Hongshan, ca. 4700 to 2900 BCE. A beautiful bead in the form of an abstract head with stylized facial features carved from a stone of golden yellow ochre hues. The bead boasts a most expressive visage comprised of almond-shaped eyes, a wide nose, open mouth, and angular ears, perforated vertically behind the face for suspension. Size: 1.5" W x 1.875" H (3.8 cm x 4.8 cm)
