oil on artist's board, inscribed on the verso "Painted by A. Hartwell / Nov. 1869" and "To Albert & Ella / from father Hartwell / Christmas 1869," presented in a period gilt composition frame.
DOA 17.75 x 15 in.
Alonzo Hartwell was a portrait painter and also created engravings and woodcuts for various publications. He had a studio in Boston on the corner of Washington and Summer streets and later moved to Waltham, MA. Albert (1840-1904) was his son and served as corporal in Company A of the 44th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. Albert married Ella Elizabeth Clark in 1867 and lived in Watertown, MA.
