436 pp. Large ledger pasted mostly with crime centered newspaper clippings, many with illustrations, criminal portraits, etc., with occasional "wanted" notices, some with original photographs. Various other loose clippings and ephemera laid in. (Folio) 43x29 cm (17x11½"), leather backed marbled boards.
A large and fascinating archive of crime related newspaper clippings from the Chicago Times, Tribune, and various other Chicago area newspapers, from the 1870's-90's. The collection features many hundreds of tales of murders, robberies, embezzlements, and retribution. Includes obituaries for Chicago's famous detective, Allan Pinkerton. Also present are a number of "wanted" notices, some illustrated with original photographs. Some notices from the Pinkerton Detective Agency are included as well. Illustrated criminal portraits are scattered throughout, as well as occasional full page illustrations. A unique window into criminals and the justice system in late 19th century Chicago.
