Description
East Asia, China, Neolithic Period, ca. 3000 to 2000 BCE. An elegant, beautiful example of grey ware pottery. The body is almost amphora-like, slowly widening to a rounded shoulder, with two lugged handles on the shoulder. A wide, cylindrical spout with a charming rim that widens to form an upwardly-curving lip. This style of grey ware is from the Chinese east coast and along the lower reaches of the Yangzi River in the south, notable for its distinctive shapes. In contrast to Neolithic Chinese pottery from other parts of the country, this eastern pottery is rarely painted, but instead burnished to a matte surface as seen here. Size: 8" W x 11.35" H (20.3 cm x 28.8 cm)
