Western Asia, Persia (present day Iran), ca. 19th century CE. An elegant steel scimitar with a traditional curved blade. The handle is crafted from animal horn, likely mammalian in origin (yak or ox), with a wide pommel end and a slender midsection; the pommel itself is a hammered brass crescent with floral motifs and a fluted button cap on top. A hammered brass guard rests below the slightly-flared handle end and features floral and crosshatch designs. The blade itself has a single beveled edge along the exterior curve while the interior curve retains a sharpened edge. The sheath is comprised of two hammered brass halves, fully covered in floral motifs similar to those on the pommel and guard, and has a dramatically-curved end with a fluted bulb tip. An applied hoop is just below the top and has a hanging brass ring for suspension. Size with sheath: 14.75" L (37.5 cm).
