Description
Northern Europe, Viking / Norse, ca. 8th to 11th century CE. A sparkling, three-stranded necklace, composed of over fifty carnelian beads of all different shapes, some round, some diamond-shaped, some elongated and multi-faceted, ranging from pale reddish and transparent to deep, opaque red. All are strung on a modern plated brass chain. Carnelian beads were highly prized by Vikings, and are known from the graves of high status women, like the one found in Saffron Walden, southeastern England, that dates to the first Viking invasion of the British Isles. Length of strand: 25" L (63.5 cm)
