Description
Western Africa, Burkina Faso, Bamana/Turka peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A lovely anthropomorphic representation of a standing male, hand-carved from a single piece of dark-brown wood. The figure's delineated arms and legs give its body a more-naturalistic appearance, with rounded shoulders, a tubular torso, and thick neck. The ovoid head, however, is noticeably zoomorphic, almost simian in form, with a coffee-bean-shaped eyes, semicircular ears, a petite mouth, ritual scarification marks across its cheeks and brow line, and a crested, crosshatch-patterned coiffure. The figure's inquisitive, trance-like expression is brought forth by its slightly-tilted head, perhaps pondering the occurrences of the spiritual realm. With finely-modeled features and a lustrous brown patina enveloping all surfaces, this is a wonderful figural example from Burkina Faso! Custom wooden display stand included. Size: 13" H (33 cm); 15.875" H (40.3 cm) on included custom stand.
