Description
**First Time At Auction**
North America, probably southeastern United States, Late Mississippian period, ca. 1400 to 1700 CE. A large hand-built terracotta vessel with a rounded base, smooth exterior walls, a wide mouth, deep interior cavity, slightly flared rim, and twin strap handles. The pottery itself is tempered with small white shell fragments, and exhibits hues of red-orange, cream, beige, and dark-gray. This urn, perhaps used initially as a cooking vessel in a domestic context, was repurposed as a burial vessel to hold the remains of an infant. Size: 9" Diameter (22.9 cm).
Provenance: private Parker collection, Atlanta, Georgia, USA, found at LU-17 in Lauderdale County, Alabama by Justin Clements in 1969

Condition
Surface wear commensurate with age and use, small loss to rim, minor nicks and chips to body, rim, and handles, and top portion covered in hair-like fibers, otherwise very good. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
