Southeast Asia, Burma (present day Myanmar) Ava period, ca. 15th to 16th century CE. Cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) process, a depiction of Varaha (Sanskrit for Boar) - an avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu assuming the form of a boar. Varaha is the third in the Dashabatara - the ten principal avatars of Vishnu. Vishnu made his appearance as Varaha when the demon Hiranyaksha stole the earth who was personified as the goddess Bhudevi and hid her in the primordial waters. Varaha valiantly slew the demon and retrieved the earth from the ocean, lifting it on his tusks, ultimately restoring Bhudevi to her place in the universe. Size: 2.125" W x 3" H (5.4 cm x 7.6 cm)

Condition
Loss to tip of staff in his left hand. Old loss to right hand. Expected surface wear. The bronze has developed a wonderful patina.
