Description
Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Nicoya-Guanacaste region, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. An intriguing janus-headed bichrome pottery vessel finished in a cream slip with black painted details. The piece is comprised of two canine heads - one with 'closed' coffee bean shaped eyes, the other with wide open round eyes - both with alert ears and toothy muzzles - sharing a body with a long, ovoid opening for storage or serving, standing upon four legs that are perforated and likely once held rattles. A wonderful and unusual example from the ancients of Costa Rica. Size: 9.5" W x 5.625" H (24.1 cm x 14.3 cm)
