Description
**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manabi culture, ca. 500 BCE and 500 CE. A double-stranded, layered necklace featuring a pair of terracotta spindle whorls, each one decorated with incised artwork depicting two owls and strung on an oxidized sterling silver chain. The owl was widely symbolic in the Pre-Columbian world. Owls were considered Shamanic, guiding humans on their journeys to other worlds, the divine, and death. In some cultures an anthropomorphic owl represented a warrior or war god. As a nocturnal bird of prey, the owl was also associated with night hunters, darkness, and the Underworld. Beautiful, meaningful, and wearable! Size: chains measure 16" L (40.6 cm)

Provenance: private Denver, Colorado USA collection
