Item Details
Description
New World, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A gorgeous and vibrant woven rebozo, a traditional long, flat garment worn by indigenous Mexican woman. Frida Kahlo famously wore one, and they are now seeing a renaissance as an aid in natural pregnancy and birth. This example is mainly tightly woven black fabric with a bright, rich red fringe attached to either end by three blue beads. Around the edges, the textile is embroidered with red and brown thread, forming a series of ornate, geometric motifs. Silver disc-shaped beads stud the motif at regular intervals. Size: 11.5" W x 80" H (29.2 cm x 203.2 cm)

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection, acquired from the James Caswell Estate, Historia Antiques, Santa Monica, California, USA
