Description
17th/18th Century Qing Dynasty Chinese Sino-Tibetan woven silk Thangka.
Depicted the Four Guardian Kings of the Directions: Vaishravana the leader, Virupaksha, Dhritarashtra and Virudhaka. Each figure is depicted wearing heavy, layered and armored, clothing in the manner of a warrior. Adorned with an elaborate crown and jewels, They are attire are long flowing garments of various color, pants and decorative boots. Standing atop a rocky outcropping they are surrounded by clouds and a variety color nimbus about the head. Along the top are three seated buddhas each red in color with the two hands placed in the mudra (gesture) of meditation supporting a black begging bowl, seated on lotus blossoms surrounded by spheres of radiant light. The top panel is embroidered with fine inscriptions with golden thread over black ground. All sets within colorful dragons medallion and auspicious patterned royal-yellow ground silk cloth.

From a Maryland private collector. Same collections can be found on Lot 97, 99, 102, 285, and 288.
