Description
Native American, Midwestern US, Eastern Woodland, ca. 200 to 1000 CE. An ovoid votive object, hand-carved from a dark-gray stone, depicting a stylized vulva with a raised base. Two recessed grooves curve around the central area and terminate at a point, and a teardrop-shaped design completes the feminine imagery. Items like this example would have been created for an individual or family as a talisman of fertility, likely kept inside the home. Size: 3.25" L (8.3 cm).
