Description
Three tier pommel, pierced guard and handle gilt and cast with running scrolls and foliated motifs. Guard cast with pierced "U S". Blade is acid etched with the Great Seal of the United States, U.S. and scrolled foliates. Original scabbard with gilt castings of shields, flags and drums on its brass mounts. Retains most of its original gold plating. Collins & Co. Hartford Connecticut 1862 stamped on ricasso. 31 inch blade. 37 1/2 inches (overall) to tip of scabbard. original tassel on 15 inch gilt ribbon. Plaque inscribed "Presented to Lt. Col. B.F. Goddard as the most popular officer in the 6th Mass. regiment by the Citizens of Lowell at a fair for the Benefit of Saint John's Hospital Dec. 2nd 1868. Together with a wealth of ephemera relating to the Sixth Mass Regiment and the "First Civil War Blood in Baltimore".

Very good, back of scabbard bumped near bras chape.
