Item Details
Description
Oil on canvas abstract expressionist painting of bold crossing white lines with spaces painted in lavender, orange, and green. Signed and attr. Larry Zox (American 1937-2006) on lower right corner. 19.5 x 15.5 inch (49.53 x 39.37 cm). Larry Zox was an American Lyrical Abstraction painter and printmaker. The movement, which evolved out of the Color Field paintings of Hans Hofmann, Morris Louis, and Kenneth Noland, also included the artists Larry Poons, Pat Lipsky, and John Hoyland, among others. Zox’s works from the early 1960s utilized painted pieces of paper collaged onto jointed pieces of plywood into dynamic geometric shapes. Out of this body of work, he developed the foundation for his future paintings by essentially replicating the collaged quality of his earlier work by using painted boundaries to create the effect of overlapping space. Born on May 31, 1937 in Des Moines, IA, Zox went on to enroll at the University of Oklahoma before studying under George Grosz at the Des Moines Art Center. Today, his works are in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Tate Modern in London, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, among others. PROVENANCE: Southern Ontario Estate
