Horn of Africa, Ethiopia, Coptic, late 19th to early 20th century CE. A double-sided icon, featuring a low relief depiction of the Virgin and Child flanked by two winged angels on one side, and the Crucifixion with Saint John and a holy woman on the other, both images skillfully carved from slate with incised details and remains of red pigment. The icon is surrounded by a carved wood frame presenting balanced geometrical decorations and a protruding abstract cross with drilled and incised details above. Mounted on a wood block stand. Size: 3.125" W x 3.875" H (7.9 cm x 9.8 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on stand.
