North America, Native American, found in Dolores, Colorado, USA, Woodland Period, ca. 1000 BCE to 1000 CE. A wonderful celt, hand-carved from a mottled dark-brown stone with light-brown inclusions. The slender body has a smooth edge on its wider end and a fingernail-style point on the narrow end; the smoothness of the surface would have taken many hours to complete. Celts like this example were typically placed into graves as funerary offerings, sometimes resting across the collarbone of the honored dead. Size: 7.25" L (18.4 cm).
