Description
A late Victorian silver mounted table cigarette box, of rounded square and engine-turned form with a central vacant cartouche, opening to reveal a wood lined interior, hallmarked A & J Zimmerman Ltd (Arthur & John Zimmerman), Birmingham 1899, width measures 3 5/8 inches (9.4 cm). Together with an early twentieth century silver mounted table cigarette box, of rectangular engine-turned form with Greek-key style border to the hinged lid, opening to reveal a wood lined interior with two compartments, hallmarked Birmingham 1917. (2).
Condition
In good overall condition, the lot displays general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use. Minor bumps and tarnish spots to the Victorian example, one side of the interior lining seats lower than the rest and there is a slight gap around the edge beneath the base. The 1917 example has minor loss of definition to the engine-turned decoration, a personal inscription has been crudely scratched into the interior of the lid which says 'From Dolly Bunny Darling 1919'. Hallmarks slightly rubbed but still legible.
