North American, southeastern United States, Mississippian, Archaic Period, ca. 8000 to 5000 BCE. A fine example of a pretty greenstone bannerstone, a weight for an atlatl. This is a curved, ground stone tool with a hole drilled into it, made to be slipped onto a circular piece of wood that formed part of the atlatl. Bannerstones were not just functional, but also probably had ritualistic or symbolic power. Comes with custom stand. Below it on the stand is a modern reproduction of a similar item. Size of ancient bannerstone: 6.2" L x 1" W x 1.5" H (15.7 cm x 2.5 cm x 3.8 cm); height on stand: 4.6" (11.7 cm)
