In the manner of Philip James de Loutherbourg (French, 1740-1812), 19th century oil on canvas depicting travelers and their horses encountering a picturesque waterfall beyond a mountain pass, along with a group of women and children relaxing near a tree with a driver watering cattle, apparently unsigned, with Costa & Conti, Florence label with exposition information affixed en verso to stretcher, 34"h x 47"w, overall dimensions including frame 42"h x 56"w x 3.5"d. The Florentine gallery of Costa & Conti became renowned for their inventory of copies after Renaissance masterworks painted by academically trained artists. The gallery was mentioned in early tourist guides, and many of their works were featured in European institutions and exhibitions, such as the present work as noted on the label.
