Item Details
Description
Ancient Near East, modern day northern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE. A heavy bronze idol in the form of a cylinder with a low relief anthropomorphic face on one side. This may be a depiction of the skull-like head of Pazuzu (Fazuzu or Pazuza) from Assyrian and Babylonian mythology. Pazuzu was the king of the demons of the wind, and represented the southwestern wind, the bearer of storms, drought, famine, and locusts. This was probably made as a votive object to be carried by an individual. Size: 1.7" H (4.3 cm)

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection
