Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cast bronze, square bread stamp with four letters on its face and a loop handle on the back. Two holes are drilled through the stamp, opposite each other. Bread stamps were an important piece of technology in the Classical world, used to signify that bread came from an authentic bakery or that it was intended for a specific family. There was also bread made to be freely distributed, which was stamped with that information. Size: 1.2" W (3 cm)
