William Jackson Palmer was an American civil engineer who fought in the Civil War, during which, he was promoted to Brevet Brigadier General and was a Medal of Honor recipient. Palmer helped build the Kansas Pacific Railway. He is known most notably as a co-founder of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. He was also the founder of Colorado Springs.
The Rio Grande and its successors eventually operated the largest network of narrow gauge railroad in the United States, and ultimately became part of the 21st century Union Pacific Railroad.
This “Report of Surveys” contains extremely important pieces American History. Some of the contents include: the first narrative of a white man crossing the Grand Canyon, as well as the first printed account of the California High Desert. It is among the first books to mention “Death Valley”.
