Description
1872 1st ed Exploration Arizona Nevada California Mojave George Wheeler Survey
The first official exploration report on the Mojave and Death Valleys! (Howes)
George Wheeler was a 19th-century American explorer who was one of the primary voyagers of the American west. Beginning in 1869, Wheeler embarked on his first exploration to California with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In 1872, a report on his explorations was published by the Washington Government Printing Office and covered Wheeler’s discoveries in Nevada and Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of Southern Colorado. This survey includes impressive folding map of topographical views of the American west.
According to Paher,
“Wheeler conducted the first official explorations of southern Nevada's interior area. His corps of engineers contributed to the report concerning the climate, geology, wildlife, the Indians and white settlement of southern Nevada in 1871. The map contains dozens of place names and is in itself a significant record. A valuable report”
