Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region (Yuat River), Biwat village, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A striking earthenware jar with a cylindrical body that abruptly bulges outward halfway up its length. The neck is slightly corseted, with a rolled, gently flared rim. Two holes pierced on either side of the neck secure the woven rattan handle. The body is incised deeply with abstract floral and leaf patterns divided from each other by thick borders of other incised lines, often at angles. Size (with handle): 6.2" W x 12" H (15.7 cm x 30.5 cm)

This vessel was made as part of an inland pottery producing tradition that was quite rare in the Sepik River region; this pottery was traded around the Yuat, Sepik, and Keram regions and was made to be used for things like sago storage, sago stirring, and water carrying.

Provenance: ex-private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection; ex-Ron Perry collection; Ron Perry collected art and artifacts for more than 40 years in New Guinea and the South Pacific. He collaborated with Carolyn Leigh to write a book entitled, "Art Dealer in the Last Unknown: Ron Perry & New Guinea Art: the early years 1964-1972" (2011).
