Description
Three (3) English needlework samplers. 1st item: Needlework school girl alphabet and family record sampler by Mary Ann Groop, dated January 28, 1828, silk on linen, with ten rows of alphabet and numerals sepaated by geometric rows. Center row with large heart bearing initials RB with initials MB below, flanked by large doves and blue flowers. The lowest row with verse, "Oh love the Lord and he will be a tender Father unto thee", two flowers, seven various sets of initials and the phrase "Think of me". Housed in a wormy maple frame. Sampler - 12 3/4" H x 17 1/2" W. Framed - 21" H x 15 5/8". American or English, early 19th century. 2nd item: Needlework school girl sampler by Jemmimer Simmons, dated March 6, 1818, silk on linen, with wide floral and leaf border, two trees at top corners, rows of alphabet, numerals and six crosses, center field of birds, hearts, flowering trees, crosses, large flower pot, dog and stag. Signed "Finished March 6 1818 Jemmimer Simmons Her Sampler Aged 12 years". Housed in a black wood frame. Sight - 14 5/8" H x 12" W. Framed - 15 3/4" H x 13 1/4" W. Likely English, early 19th century. 3rd item: English school girl needlework sampler, wool on linen, four rows of upper case and lower case alphabet and numerals over pictoral image of center apple tree, birds, flowering shrubs, flowers and two crowns, signed "Mary Cundil 1858", over geometric border including trees and flowers. Housed in a maple wood frame. Sight - 11 1/2" H x 14 1/2" W. Framed - 13" H x 16 1/4" W. English, mid 19th century. Provenance: Sevier County, TN private collection. Condition
1st item: Overall good condition with two areas of frayed linen on right edge, ea. approx. 1 1/4" L. Some fading to colors. 2nd item: Scattered tears and losses to linen ground, approximately 18-20, largest 1/4" x 3/4". Some browning to linen and some discoloration to silk threads. 3rd item: Some discoloration to linen, mostly at middle and upper left margins. Grime under glass.
