Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Mayan, ca. 600 to 950 CE. A lead-glazed terracotta vessel in the form of the head of the Mayan Old God (Huehueteotl, also known as the Old Fire God). The aged visage presents a plethora of incised wrinkles, some arranged in concentric circles upon the cheeks and over the corners of his mouth and others as repeating furrows over the brows and temples. His elderly face is distinguished by bulging almond-shaped eyes, protruding earlobes, a somewhat jutting lower jaw, and a closed mouth. The visage presents an overall tawny orange complexion as well as traces of relatively shiny grey-black. The head was molded from two large halves, and a short collared neck with a slightly flared rim completes the vessel. Truly an intriguing piece. Size: 3.125" W at widest point x 3.75" H (7.9 cm x 9.5 cm)

As the name plumbate implies, most plumbate vessels look metallic, as if made of lead, but the term plumbate is a misnomer as this metal was unknown in the pre-Hispanic world. Some so-called plumbate pots turned black and shiny when oxygen was cut off toward the end of firing; however, they were actually intended to be orange or red orange in color like this piece which presents areas of shiny black over a mostly matte orange glaze. Scholars believe that plumbate ware was probably made by a very small number of artisans around the Mexico/Guatemala border who then exported them throughout the greater Mesoamerican world.

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.

Provenance: ex-Dr. G. Hermann collection, Denver, Colorado, USA, acquired before 1980
