Description

Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A beautiful necklace comprised of fifty-two tubular faience beads in hues of green and blue, dozens of maroon disc-shaped beads, and a tall glazed Djed amulet as the central pendant. The Djed pillar was symbolic of the human spine, and was placed on the back of a recently-mummified individual in order to facilitate the process of reincarnation and reanimation. Each terminal has a small silver loop, and both ends are held together by a separate S-shaped silver hook. Though strung in modern times, this necklace is certainly a wearable piece of history! Size: 20" L (50.8 cm); size of largest bead (Djed): 1" H (2.5 cm).

Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection, with beads acquired from an old California, USA collection
