The blade is tight and it fits well into your hand. The ornate pattern of "Repousse" was developed by Samuel Kirk in 1828. It was both the name of the pattern as well as the type of silversmithing. Over the years "repousse" has been copied often and has become known for the type of workmanship perhaps more than the pattern. An excellent basic definition of "repousse" is from STERLING FLATWARE FASHIONS: "Embossed decoration done by hand where the ornamentation is brought up in high relief by driving out the metal from the inside out and then modeled back into detailed form from the front by chasing". In 1815, when Samuel Kirk was 22 years old, he and John Smith founded the company. In 1820 Kirk continued the company which was to become the oldest independent silver company in America.
