Fernando Botero (Colombian, b.1932) Untitled (The Picnic), Oil on paper, signed and dated 94, lower left. The verso bears two impressions of an ink stamp from Banco De La Republica Columbia, and a color copy of a (reduced) certificate from Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogata is also affixed verso.

The painting depicts a couple enjoying an outdoor picnic in the countryside. The man strums a guitar while the woman lies next to him fast asleep, perhaps an effect of drinking a local intoxicating beverage, an empty bottle lies on its side close to her hands. The glass belonging to the man is filled with an orange liquid waiting to be consumed and tropical fruit is scattered around the picnic blanket.

Fernando Botero is a Colombian figurative artist and sculptor. Born in Medellin, his signature style, also known as Boterismo, depicts people and figures in large, exaggerated volume, which can represent political criticism or humor, depending on the piece. He is considered the most recognized and quoted living artist from Latin America, and his art can be found in highly visible places around the world, such as Park Avenue in New York City and the Champs-elysees in Paris. Botero explains his use of these large people, as they are often called by critics, in the following way: An artist is attracted to certain kinds of form without knowing why. You adopt a position intuitively; only later do you attempt to rationalize or even justify it.
