Pre-Columbian, Panama, Gran Cocle, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A beautiful polychrome pottery fruitero dish hailing from the Gran Cocle Kingdom of Panama. It has a wide footed pedestal base, a wide basin with a shallow central cavity, and a rolled rim painted in alternating earthtone colors. The bowl face, characteristic of the Conte/Macaracas style, features four distinct sections inhabited by boldly-delineated saurian forms - birdlike/dragon/crocodile/amphibian creatures painted in red, purple, and black atop a cream ground; a thick red-and-black band separates each respective beast. With such wonderful artistry and painstaking detail, artifacts from the Gran Cocle Kingdom rival that of even the finest ancient art masters! Size: 11.5" W x 5.5" H (29.2 cm x 14 cm).

Plate repaired from several pieces with adhesive residue and overpainting along break lines, and heavy restoration to bottom of foot. Age-commensurate surface wear, with small chips and abrasions to bottom of foot and rim. Fading and light discoloration to surface pigmentation, but imagery is still clear and vibrant. Nice mineral deposits throughout.
