Description
Johnson’s New Map of the State of Texas, Johnson & Ward, 1865. This is an exceptionally clean example of Johnson and Ward's highly desirable 1865 map of Texas. Because of the high acidity in the paper used by the firm’s publishers, Johnson maps can often contain many dark sulfide spots that detract from these great maps’ appearance. This one has just two tiny and nearly invisible pinpoint marks, plus it is a superior strike from the plate so the ink image is crisp and vivid black. Created during the Civil War, this extraordinary folio map details the state of Texas in full. Identifies the elevated Table Lands, el Llando estadado (the Staked Plain), the U.S. Mail Route, numerous geographical notations and features original hand-coloring according to county. El Paso, Presidio and Bexar counties are gigantic and occupy much of the western portion of the state. Insets in the lower left quadrant detail Sabine Lake (with depth soundings), Galveston Bay (from the U.S.C.S.), and the northern panhandle. Throughout, Johnson identifies various cities, towns, rivers and an assortment of additional topographical details. The route of the San Antonio-El Paso Mail Line (in service until 1861) is delineated (via Ft. Clark/Camp Lancaster/Ft. Davis). Also depicted is the route of the Butterfield Overland Mail Route (in service 1858-61) from Ft. Bliss to Gainesville/Sherman. Just a whisper of toning to margins and a 3/8” margin tear, else near fine.
