Description
Eastern Europe, Greece, ca. 19th century CE. A copper triptych icon with a small clasp on the side, its interior painted with three gorgeous scenes in brass frames. The first scene shows the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist; the second (center) shows the Pentecost, also known as the Descent of the Holy Spirit; the third shows the Ascension. Each image is beautifully painted, with excellent detail and gilding creating a rich appearance. The copper exterior of the icon is decorated with incised crosses and other patterns, including a large, three-barred cross on the face. One of the nicest triptychs I've seen. Size when open: 11.05" W x 5" H (28.1 cm x 12.7 cm)
